5 feed brands reducing their plastic waste
One of the most frequently asked questions when we talk about reducing plastic around the yard is how to tackle plastic feed bags and supplement tubs.
The good news is, things are changing. Feed brands are sitting up and taking notice when it comes to improving their sustainability and you don't need to make any compromises when it comes to your horses dietary needs and sustainability values.
Donna Case, aka The Horse Feed Guru, is an independent equine nutritionist who works with and advises horse owners all over the world on the best diets for their horses. When formulating any diet, a lot of elements need to be considered, such as workload, condition, underlying health issues, etc. But we asked Donna how we can choose feed with the environment in mind, and more precisely, the packaging.
We caught up with Donna to share some of her finds. Please note that Donna is not recommending the brands or products below above any other product.
Blue Chip Feeds – in addition to buying the Super Concentrated Balancers in plastic tubs, there’s an option that allows people to purchase eco-friendly refill bags that are made from paper and don’t have a plastic scoop included.
Feedmark – allows customers to buy supplement refill bags which can be recycled
Saracen – this company has 100% recyclable feed bags. There’s a great video here
The Little Feed Company- this company is taking environmental issues seriously and uses biodegradable pouches for many of the products on offer. There are companies who will come and fill your feed bin with feed thus removing packaging completely.
Chestnut Feeds is one example, and widely promote their bulk buy bin system
